  • Property available in Haslemere

There is a wide range of residential property available in Haslemere and the surrounding area; whether you are seeking quaint villages offering cottages, large estates and rural calm, or a fine luxury town house, Knight Frank can find the property that’s right for you.

    History

Early records of the existence of Haslemere date from 1221 when a hamlet was founded on the shores of a small lake, fed by a natural spring in what is now West Street. The hamlet grew steadily with local industries including agriculture, iron ore smelting and glass making, bringing prosperity to the town and by late 1394 was sufficiently important to be granted a Charter by King Richard II.

During the 18th and 19th centuries spinning and weaving, the making of paper, braid for army uniforms, bricks, pottery, chestnut fencing, rush baskets and brooms manufactured from local birch were all local activities. The latter were supplied to Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace.

In 1859 the construction of the Portsmouth to London railway line was completed.

The fast rail link provided an easy route to London Waterloo and the busy commercial shipping hub of Portsmouth in the South, enabling many people to come to Haslemere and the surrounding district to enjoy the countryside.

During this time many fine houses were built and the area became, as it is today, a fashionable place in which to live.
