Living in Belgravia

Once just a piece of wasteland for grazing sheep, Belgravia is now home to some of the most prestigious addresses in London including beautiful garden squares such as the famous Eaton Square and Belgrave Square. Situated in the City of Westminster, between Buckingham Palace and Chelsea, Belgravia is just minutes away from Sloane Street and Knightsbridge. Centrally located and easily accessible, the area has a cosmopolitan and international community offering exclusive shopping, fantastic amenities and fashionable restaurants.

Belgravia’s prime location benefits from being within walking distance of some of London’s most famous sites. The London Museums of South Kensington - the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum; Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, and the Royal Albert Hall, famous for hosting the Promenade Concerts, are all within the vicinity.

To the west of Belgravia is the exclusive shopping area of Knightsbridge, which includes the international and exquisitely expensive fashion stores of Sloane Street, and the world’s leading department stores of Harrods and Harvey Nichols, as well as some of the finest restaurants in London. The Chelsea Flower Show is held annually in the grounds of the Royal Hospital near Sloane Square.

To the east, along Piccadilly, is London's West End with its abundance of theatres, cinemas, clubs and nightlife.

Excellent transport links are available with Knightsbridge tube station and the Piccadilly Line providing a direct link to the terminals at Heathrow Airport, and with an exceptional choice of schools in the area, and great leisure facilities including several urban spas, Belgravia is without doubt a very fashionable and desirable part of London.

Property available in Belgravia

Whether you are looking for a traditional Belgravia town house, a modern penthouse apartment or a freehold mews house with parking, Knight Frank can find the property that is right for you.

Originally known as Five Fields, Belgravia takes its name from one of the Duke of Westminster’s subsidiary titles, Viscount Belgrave. Prior to its grand development, the area had a reputation for being one of the worst in London.

Populated with highwaymen, murderers and thieves, the area was marshy and waterlogged and originally had a bridge over the river Westbourne known as ‘Bloody Bridge’ due to the number of attacks and murders that took place at the site.

Building was undertaken in the early 19th century, when Thomas Cubitt drained the land allowing him to create solid foundations for new houses for the Duke of Westminster. It was the Earl of Essex who was the first to buy one of the houses in Belgrave Square, after which others were to follow, making Belgravia one of London's most fashionable residential districts from the beginning, and remains so to this day.
